It truly has every element in it that a steampunk story nan have–including t Steampunk II: The Best World Music of It’s helped my credibility on campus to be able to point to a mainstream writer like Chabon. Joe Lansdale’s “Steam Man of the Prairie and the Dark Rider” is a crazed remix of The Time Machine19th-century steam robot stories, the American tall tale tradition, flying saucers, Draculaand a looping space shuttle plot. Originally a literary movement that mashed cyberpunk-style themes with speculative rewritings of Victorian culture, steampunk is now equally a subculture devoted to repurposing mass-market consumer products into gloriously obsessive idiosyncratic designs.
It is wonderful to see how broad a spectrum of fiction they have brought in, with stories set in many different locales. Some are excellent, some bored me to tears and others were just your typical middle of the road stories. It seems the editors are all so intent upon showing how intelligent they are and forget to include some actual decent stories in their collections.
It also displays the political side of steampunk in a very succinct way.

Steampunk II: Steampunk Reloaded
The second volume was pretty bad. Maybe that was the point? It also came up with The New Weirdbecause initially I’d wanted to include some stuff by Alexandro Jodorowsky from Humanoids Publishing, and other examples of graphica and art that could be considered New Weird whether the practitioners had thought of it that way or not, and that had been influences on the people in that anthology.
This book is a must-have collection for fans of steampunk and those who love a dark, rousing tale of what could have been. I didn’t love every story, but I enjoyed the vast majority of them; the perfect balance of dark and light stories, some classic neo-Victorian steampunk and some more unconventional pieces.
